Archbishop Emeritus Joseph F. Naumann’s lifelong commitment to the dignity of human life was
shaped by a deeply personal family story: his father died before he was born, and his mother
courageously chose life and raised him in faith. More than 30 years ago, he shared with
Vitae Foundation founder Carl Landwehr a vision of a culture that cherishes every life,
helping inspire Vitae’s creation and its mission to make abortion unthinkable.
A nationally respected pro-life leader, longtime Vitae supporter, and Chairman of the
U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, Archbishop
Emeritus Naumann has been a steady advocate for the dignity of human life, whose
witness reflects a commitment to the sanctity and dignity of every human life that
